Enroll in a Public Charter School

The most common option of California homeschooling is enrolling in a public charter school. This option allows freedom to homeschool and be given a yearly stipend. The curriculum options in California charters differ upon individual families.

Establish an in-home Private School (PSA)

Families that choose to establish an in home private school will file a Private School Affidavit. This option is for families wanting to privately homeschool their children. This requires families to provide curricular, administration, and other materials.

Enroll in a Private School Satellite Program (PSP)

A Private School Satellite Program (PSP) are private schools that have filed an affidavit. Once families enroll in a PSP, they become a teacher for the school. The curriculum guidelines, administrative support and fees vary depending on the school.

Hire a Private Tutor/Hold a California Teaching Credential

If a parent or a private tutor holds a California Teaching Credential, you may teach a child under the private tutorial exemption. This option can only apply for the grade levels under the Teaching Credential. This option does not require filing of PSAs.

Enroll in a Public School That Offers Independent Study

Most public schools offer Independent Studies or Home-Based Study as an option for homeschooling. Contact your local public school districts to see available options. This option of Independent Study is guided by a teacher without other students.
